Despite what the cyclocross obsessed have been saying for nearly two months, nothing actually says cyclocross like… well… cyclocross. With the Chicago Cyclcross Cup having officially kicked off at Jackson Park, we can now say that cyclocross is actually here. Finally.
Taking place on a sliver of land adjoining Chicago’s spectacular Lake Shore Drive, the Jackson Park Cyclocross race takes place in a park oddly named “Jackson Park.” It’s weird how that works. Tasked with only a sliver of land to design a course and what will likely be the largest fields of the year (although, you should all really come on out to Campton Cross, too), xXx racing did an incredible job putting this race on… again. Thanks to them for that!
We’ve done well there in the past. So, we had a sqaud of 17 riders and countless other supporters, fans, groupies, and “hanger’s-on” (everybody deserves an entourage). We didn’t just go back for the groupies, though, we were back because we love racing bikes. We’ll race anywhere. Especially on the new Cannondales the shop is carrying. The CAAD X is one mean bike. And, you need a mean bike when you’re battling nearly one-thousand of your closest friends.
But, you also need to be “properly fueled.” We don’t have to worry about that, though. While the USADA was there testing for dopers, we’re pretty much just fueled by Gu. That and the Windy City Patty Wagon, who happens to have at Jackson Park to serve up some pretty awesome BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burgers:
So, it was a pretty fantastic day the races. Not only for the company and the awesome food, but also because we saw some decent results. Not the least of which was John Craychee taking second in the 60+ and our junior team flying through their races with Andy Heuser taking second by mere inches (in a photo finish) and Isaac Drew taking 4th in the 15-18 year old race, and Chris Heuser taking 4th among the younger juniors. And, in what had to be an absolutely brutal push to the front, Peter FK started 49th in a stacked 1/2/3 field and clawed his way to 25th before running out of time to pick off a few more. Nice job! The season is looking good, and we’re just getting started.
Wer’e not the only ones who had such a great time. You can check out other reports and wrap-ups on the Chicago Cyclocross Cup site.
