Looking to get into Cyclocross Racing? Cannondale has the Perfect Bike for every New Cross Racer! The CAAD X Ulterga Disc offers a lot of bike for the New Racer at an affordable price. When looking for a Cyclocross Racing Bike many things are important, Durability, Weight, Stiffness, Comfort, and Componentry we will be going through how this bicycle covers all of these categories very well.
First Durability, The CAAD X Ultegra is an Aluminum frame but does not compare to most other aluminum frames. This Bike is a direct descendent from The CAAD 10 meaning it’s as good as it gets when it comes to Aluminum. Aluminum is always a great option for new riders because it takes away some of the uncertainty of durability. Aluminum Frames can take a crash and live to tell about it. This bike will certainly be working week after week of hard Cyclocross Racing.
Weight, Most people are hesitant to buy an Aluminum Cross bike because they are afraid of it being heavy. The CAAD X frame as said before is a direct decedent of the CAAD 10 meaning it’s a very light frame. This frame with an Ultegra build is not the lightest bike on earth but for an Aluminum Bike it has a lot to offer. With a Stock weight around 20lb’s this bike is plenty light to race with. A wheel change would make this bike slightly lighter and would be a nice upgrade down the road but is not essential to getting started or racing on this bike.
Stiffness, This Bike is FAST! Much Like the CAAD 10 the Side to Side stiffness in the bottom bracket of this bike is unmatched. Power Transfer is not an issue when it comes to the Cannondale CAAD X and its Overbuilt Bottom Bracket!
Comfort, This Bike is Stiff but it is also Compliant. You may ask how that can be, and I will tell you. The bike is stiff when it comes to Side to Side Flex and it is Compliant when it comes to Up and Down Flex eliminating much of the vibration and abuse of any harsh terrain. Cyclocross Racing is very abusive on the body and Cannondale Knows This so they have incorporated their Infamous SAVE Technology into the rear end of this frame. SAVE Technology is when they thin out the seat stays to give the bike a certain amount of flex creating a Micro Suspension Effect.
Componentry, This Bike comes with a Shimano Ultegra Drive Train. As you all may know Shimano Ultegra is not a top of the line Groupset but it’s pretty darn close and for the new rider it offers a level of shifting performance that will be more than sufficient. Another big selling point to this bike is the Disc Brakes. Disc Brakes are the wave of the Future weather you like it or not as they offer substantially more braking power and better brake actuation. Linked here is a previous article I wrote about Disc Brakes in Cyclocross if you want more insight about Disc Brakes.
The final piece to the equation is the Price. Keep in mind you are looking at a race ready Cyclocross Bike not a entry level price point bike. The Cannondale CAAD X Ultegra Sells for $2170 MSRP, Not a bad price for a race ready set up on a top shelf cross frame. Bicycle Heaven Stocks many different CAAD X builds and all CAAD X Sizes.
