Ben Kanute hasn’t raced with the team since the Elgin Crit last year. So, maybe he got “lucky” and snuck away from a 3′s field. Maybe they let him go because they didn’t know who he was. Maybe it was all luck when he got in a break, attacked the break, and solo’d home for a huge win. We’ll take luck.
Maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t luck, though. If they didn’t know who he was, they just don’t read the ESPN web site enough. And if they didn’t know who he was at Elgin, why did they let him ride away and win by even more at Fox River Grove on Sunday?
What’s that saying about the definition of luck being when preparation meets opporunity? By that definition he was lucky. He is also a world-class athlete. We’ll take luck any day if that’s easier to believe, though.
By sweeping both days, Ben won the two-day omnium and a couple of nice omnium leaders jerseys. Because the Elgin crit was part of our teammate rewards program, the guys who were throwing up the blocks and following the chasers are are going to get rewarded. Nick, Eric, and Matt are all going to be reimbursed by the team for their entry fees. Pretty cool, eh?
Not to be out-done, Rob Kelley put his ROK Coaching methodology to the test in the early morning masters races. Rob’s methodology might have something to it, as he won the 45+. In doing so, he also earned race reimbursements for everybody on the team in that race!
Throw in Mara‘s 8th in the Women’s 30+ and Billy Akers landing just outside the top 10, and you’ve got a nice weekend of racing!
Speaking of Eric, Ben and the 3′s, here’s the entire race from Eric’s handlebars. Note the interesting and diverse lines through the chicane (at least one of the wrecks there was captured on camera).
One of the more fun aspects of the weekend involved the women. The Vanderkitten Women’s Pro team decided they’d do a little racing. That wasn’t the fun part. The fun part was watching the newly-upgraded (to Cat 3) Mara and the newly-upgraded (to Cat 2) Ashley take their first stab at racing against a full team of fast ladies who know what they’re doing.
We’re happy to say that both ladies did incredibly well! Mara even shocked onlookers by attacking the field going into the first turn on the last lap at Elgin! Both ladies achieved pack finishes just outside the top ten on Saturday with Mara doing the same on Sunday (Ashley didn’t race). Watch the race from Ashley’s view:
Then there’s that dude Nicolai. You know, the same Nicolai Brochner who is “putting the hog” on all the wins. The same Nicolai who’s been called up to the Bissell Pro Team and was at Fox River Grove training for Philly.
That Nicolai. Want to see a 10 minute highlight video of him hurting all the fast locals? You do? Well, then, you’ve come to the right place:
Next weekend we take on the traditional races out in the Quad Cities, as well as the Memorial Day Masters races in Wooddale.
P.S. – You can just go ahead and call this dude “Flash.”
