What a weekend of fun! Superweek (a 17 day series of racing through the Chicago and Milwaukee area, for those who don’t know) had a Geneva edition for the third straight year. Not only was it in Geneva, it was 2 blocks from Team HQ. Can’t pass up a race you can ride your bike to, right? And we didn’t.
Eric Christ put on one of the more inspired rides of the day. The above pic shows Eric where he spent most of the 30 mile race- off the front and ahead of the pack. Despite his monster effort, Eric and his breakmate were gobbled up by the chasing pack as they went into the first turn on the final lap. Unfortunately bike racing doesn’t always reward the hardest working rider, and this was one such case. Great ride for Eric who will surely be flying come cyclocross season.
Jeff got some great photos of the team at Geneva, if you’re looking for some. It was also well covered by the local media (including this article with a shot of Mara driving the front of the lead group in the Women’s 3/4).
The day before, a decent crew went down to the Morton Crit for the last round of the Illinois Cup. The fantastic little race was made extra-difficult with the temperature having risen to 109 degrees just prior to the 1/2/3 start. Ouch! The picture (below) of Rich pretty much sums up how that day went. Despite the heat and brutal conditions Scott Bowden (a recent upgrade to cat 3) gutted out both the 1/2/3 race and the cat 3 for a day he won’t forget any time soon.
It wasn’t all ice cream trucks and sprinklers for everyone else, though. Rob Kelley made the trip down with honorary team rider and ROK coaching prodigy Nikolai. Also known as “the Danish Missile” (as an appropriate description of his nationality and ability to sprint), Nikolai is staying with Rob to spend a few weeks racing in the states. And, boy, did he race at Morton. He was in a group of riders to lap the field. When they caught the pack, they were told there was a chase group 37 seconds off the front. So, Nikolai went after them. And, of course, he caught them. Then, he out-sprinted them all. The local paper got a great shot of the Missile crossing the finish line, hand in the air.
Not to be confined to one state, Dave Ross flew the team colors up in Wisconsin. After starting the year with a string of second-place finishes, Dave seems to have figured out how to hit the top rung of the podium. Dave went to the Wheel and Sprocket Crit and won the Cat 4 race! He has now won the last 3 races he has started! Can anybody else see an upgrade in his future?
Finally, this weekend we’re pretty sure we saw Mark Moeller rolling around in a B.H. Kit. He is the reigning 40+ U.S.A.C. road race champion. If you’re counting at home (which, we know you weren’t last week) that makes 7 State Champion jerseys currently credited to our team for 2012. Not too shabby!
The team is going to be racing all over the midwest this weekend. Superweek racing continues near Milwaukee. A few folks are headed down to the Indy Crit, and also over for some racing in Michgan. Come on out and join the fun.
